Aaron Schneider (born July 26, 1965)[1] is an American filmmaker and cinematographer.
His short filmTwo Soldiers (2003) won theAcademy Award for Best Live Action Short Film. He won anIndependent Spirit Award for his feature film debut,Get Low (2009).
Schneider was born in 1965 inSpringfield, Illinois, and raised inMossville, Illinois. He is a graduate of theUniversity of Southern California.[2] He is ofJewish background, and his father Delwin Schneider was a Korean War veteran.[3]
His cinematography work includes the TV seriesMurder One (for which he was nominated for a 1996Emmy Award) and the pilot episode of the seriesSupernatural, as well as the filmsKiss the Girls andSimon Birch. He was also the second unit director of photography forTitanic and second unit director forFinal Destination 5.
In 2004, he won theAcademy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for the live actionshort filmTwo Soldiers (shared with producer Andrew J. Sacks). The 40-minute short was based on ashort story written byWilliam Faulkner.
Schneider's first feature film,Get Low, drew positive reviews when it premiered at the2009 Toronto International Film Festival, and was subsequently purchased for distribution bySony Pictures Classics.[4] The film was released in the US on July 30, 2010. It starsRobert Duvall in a much-lauded performance, in addition toSissy Spacek,Bill Murray, andLucas Black. It earned Schneider theIndependent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.
In 2020, after a decade hiatus from features, Schneider directedGreyhound, a World War II drama centered on theBattle of the Atlantic and starringTom Hanks.[5][6]
