A Mermaid is a 1900oil painting by the BritishartistJohn William Waterhouse.[1] It was inspired byAlfred, Lord Tennyson's 1830 poemThe Mermaid. He produced anoil sketch for the work in 1892.[2] Waterhouse presented it to theRoyal Academy of Arts at hisdiploma work, having been elected to full membership five years earlier. It was displayed at the academy'sSummer Exhibition of 1901 atBurlington House.[3]
