AXFS

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Compressed read-only file system

AXFS (Advanced XIP Filesystem) is acompressedread-onlyfile system forLinux, initially developed atIntel, and now maintained atNumonyx. It was designed to useexecute in place (XIP) alongside compression aiming to reduceboot and program load times, while retaining a smallmemory footprint forembedded devices. This is achieved by mixing compressed and uncompressedpages in the same executable file.[1] AXFS isfree software licensed under theGPL.

Cramfs is another read-onlycompressed file system that supports XIP (with patches); however, it uses a strategy of decompressing entire files, whereas AXFS supports XIP with page granularity.[2]
