AVS Futebol SAD is a Portuguese professionalfootball club currently playing in theLiga Portugal Betclic (the first tier of thePortuguese football league system). They are based in the town ofVila das Aves, and play inEstádio do CD Aves. Founded in 2023, the club comes from the renaming of formerUD Vilafranquense SAD after moving to Vila das Aves.[1]

History

[edit]

The club was founded on 5 May 2023 afterUD Vilafranquense'sSAD relocated fromVila Franca de Xira toVila das Aves due to poor stadium conditions. Vilafranquense went to theAF Lisboa district championships while Vilafranquense SAD (now AVS) secured their spot in the2023–24 Liga Portugal 2. The new club has no relation to the defunctClube Desportivo das Aves or itsphoenix club Clube Desportivo das Aves 1930, apart from the sharing of its infrastructures. This situation is similar to theBelenenses andB-SAD case which happened in 2018.[2]

In 2024, they made their debut in thetop tier of Portuguese football by winning the playoff inLiga Portugal 2 after defeatingPortimonense in promotion play-offs.
