AGBO (also known asGozie AGBO) is an American independententertainment company specializing in film and television production, and based in Downtown Los Angeles. The company is led byAnthony and Joe Russo (known collectively as the Russo brothers), who founded it in 2017 along withMike Larocca and Todd Makurath.
AGBO's film productions include21 Bridges, starringChadwick Boseman;Extraction, written byJoe Russo and starringChris Hemsworth, and its sequel,Extraction 2;[1]The Gray Man, directed and produced by the Russo Brothers and starringRyan Gosling;Everything Everywhere All at Once, written and directed byDaniels and winner of seven Academy Awards includingBest Picture; and the 2025 filmThe Electric State.[2] Upcoming film productions include alive-action remake ofHercules, to be directed byGuy Ritchie;[3]The Bluff, starringPriyanka Chopra Jonas;The Whisper Man, starringRobert De Niro; and the MCU filmsAvengers: Doomsday andAvengers: Secret Wars.

In March 2015, theRusso brothers announced they were launching a production company, then known as Getaway Productions, and tappedMike Larocca as President.[5] AGBO was officially founded in 2017 by the Russo brothers, along with Larocca and Todd Makurath.[6]
In March 2018, it was announced that screenwritersChristopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote the screenplays forCaptain America: The Winter Soldier andCaptain America: Civil War, were named Co-Presidents of Story at AGBO.[7] The name "AGBO" was a surname selected randomly byAnthony and Joe Russo from an Ohio phone book years prior.[8]
On January 5, 2022, it was announced that theRusso brothers sold a 38% minority stake in AGBO to Tokyo-based game makerNexon for $400 million.[9] AGBO was consequently valued at $1.1 billion.[9]
In July 2016, it was announced that theRusso brothers would co-produceDeadly Class alongside creatorRick Remender.[10] The series starredLana Condor andBenedict Wong and aired onSyfy from December 20, 2018 through March 20, 2019.[11][12][13]
In June 2016, it was announced that theRusso brothers would produce action film21 Bridges forSTX Entertainment.[14] In July 2018 it was announced thatChadwick Boseman would star in the AGBO-produced movie,[15] which was released on November 22, 2019.[16]
In August 2017, it was announced that AGBO acquired the rights to the bookExit West byMohsin Hamid, withMorten Tyldum set to direct.[17] On December 31, 2017,Barack Obama includedExit West on his list of the best books he read in 2017,[18] and then Obama's production company,Higher Ground Productions, announced they would team up with AGBO to produce a feature adaptation forNetflix, withRiz Ahmed attached to star, andYann Demange directing.[19] In August 2022, author Hamid stated that the film is still in the development stage.[20]
In December 2017, it was announced that AGBO won the rights to the graphic novelThe Electric State bySimon Stålenhag,[21] and in March 2018 it was announced that screenwriting duoChristopher Markus and Stephen McFeely would adapt the screenplay.[7] In December 2020, casting news broke thatMillie Bobby Brown would star in the upcoming sci-fi film.[22] In November 2022, it was announced thatGiancarlo Esposito,Ke Huy Quan, andAnthony Mackie were joining the cast ofThe Electric State.[23] The film, starring Brown andChris Pratt, was released on Netflix on March 14, 2025.[24]
In January 2018, it was announced that AGBO andNeon acquired the worldwide rights toAssassination Nation, written and directed bySam Levinson, at that year'sSundance Film Festival in a $10 million deal.[25] The film was released on September 21, 2018 in association withRefinery29.[26] In June 2018, AGBO optioned the film adaptation of Alex North's novelThe Whisper Man, with AGBO producing.[27]
In August 2018, AGBO optionedNico Walker's novelCherry in a bidding war and announced this would be the next film theRusso brothers would direct afterAvengers: Endgame.[28]Tom Holland andCiara Bravo star in the film.[29] Apple bought the rights toCherry in September 2020. The film had its theatrical release on February 26, 2021, and was released onApple TV+ on March 12, 2021.[30][31]
On August 30, 2018, it was announced thatAnthony and Joe Russo were set to produce theDaniels' (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) sci-fi action filmEverything Everywhere All at Once, withA24 as the distributor. Released in 2022, the film would go on to be nominated for elevenAcademy Awards, winning seven, includingBest Picture.[32][33]
On August 30, 2018, it was announced thatSam Hargrave would directDhaka, later renamedExtraction, from a screenplay byJoe Russo withChris Hemsworth set to star in the film.[34] The film was released on Netflix on April 24, 2020, and received the biggest premiere viewership in the site's history, leading to a sequel being put in development from the same team.[35]
In October 2018, it was announced that AGBO would come on as a producer for theEmily Mortimer-starring indie horror filmRelic,[36] the feature directorial debut forNatalie Erika James. It debuted to critical acclaim at theSundance Film Festival in January 2020.[37] On March 10, 2020, the film was acquired byIFC Midnight with a release date set for July 10, 2020.[38][39]
In October 2018, it was announced that AGBO would partner withConde Nast Entertainment to produce the thrillerMosul withWorld War Z screenwriterMatthew Michael Carnahan set to direct.[40] The film played at the76th Venice International Film Festival and2019 Toronto International Film Festival. It was later acquired byNetflix and released in November 2020.[41]
On March 20, 2019, AGBO acquired JJ Braider's scriptAll Fun And Games.[42] On January 13, 2022, casting announcements were made for the forthcoming horror-thriller film, with AGBO producing,Asa Butterfield andNatalia Dyer to star, and Ari Costa and Eren Celeboglu to co-direct.[43]
In April 2020, it was announced that theRusso brothers would team withWalt Disney Pictures to produce alive-action remake of the 1997 animated filmHercules. On June 17, 2022, it was announced thatGuy Ritchie would direct the remake.[44]
In April 2021, it was announced thatEpix gave a 10-episode straight-to-series order toFrom, a contemporary sci-fi horror series, created by John Griffin and produced by AGBO and theRusso brothers.[45] It was renewed for a second season in April 2022.[46]
In July 2021, AGBO announced it was teaming up withNetflix for a heist thriller film starringRegé-Jean Page and written byNoah Hawley.[47]
In August 2021,Hulu announced the expansion of its true-crime collection, including the docuseriesCaptive Audience: A Real American Horror Story,[48] which is executive produced by AGBO's Anthony Russo, Joe Russo and Mike Larocca.[49] In July 2022, it was announced that the docuseries becameHulu's most-viewed nonfiction TV program in its first month of release.[50]
In February 2022, it was announced that AGBO andDisney Television Animation would produce an animated film adaptation ofSuperfudge, one ofJudy Blume's best selling books.[51]
The Gray Man sequel and spinoff withNetflix was announced in July 2022, withRyan Gosling reprising his role as The Gray Man, with AGBO producing and theRusso brothers directing.[52]Paul Wernick andRhett Reese, writers ofDeadpool, will write the spinoff series.[53]
On September 15, 2022, it was announced that AGBO would executive produce aButch and Sundance series atAmazon Studios, starringRegé-Jean Page andGlen Powell.[54]
TheCitadel global multi-series announced the casting ofMatilda De Angelis as the lead for the Italian installment of the spy thriller franchise, which AGBO is producing in conjunction withAmazon Studios.[55]
In November 2022, it was announced theRusso brothers would executive produce and direct an eight-episode limited series about theFTX scandal in conjunction withAmazon Studios.[56]
In November 2022,Variety named theRusso brothers "Showmen of the Year" and the cover featured the Russos withChris Pratt,Priyanka Chopra, andZoe Saldaña all as part of upcoming AGBO projects.[57]
In February 2025, the TV seriesMercenary was announced, a spinoff of theExtraction film franchise. The Netflix series will starOmar Sy as a mercenary on a mission to Libya to rescue hostages.[58] The filmExtraction 3, again starring Chris Hemsworth, is set to begin production in 2026.[59]
Established in 2017 through AGBO, the National Italian American Film Forum Grant program annually awards multiple $8,000 grants to ambitious filmmakers around the country to create documentary, fiction or nonfiction narrative films that explore the Italian American experience for the benefit of future generations.[60]
In October 2017, it was announced that theRusso brothers would offer an annual fellowship withSlamdance Film Festival which would consist of a $25,000 prize, filmmaking support and an office at AGBO.[61]
In June 2019, it was announced that AGBO partnered with theAmerican Film Institute (AFI) for an inaugural development grant which would award the recipient $25,000 to develop a project as well as year-long mentorship from AGBO.[62]
In May 2020, theRusso brothers announced their new video podcast,Pizza Film School.[63] The podcast aims to educate and spread some love to favorite classic films, as well as local pizzerias while movie lovers are stuck at home during the pandemic. Guests includedJosh Brolin,Taika Waititi,Mark Hamill,Bob Gale and more.[64] The second season premiered in April 2023 with theRussos talking to other directors including a viral episode withZack Snyder, which was a crossover between the Marvel and DC universes. Other guests includedEmerald Fennell,Nia DaCosta,Justin Lin,Justin Chon,R.J. Cutler, and more.[65]
In April 2021, AGBO began running its annual "No Sleep 'til Film Fest" competition, an opportunity for emerging creators to submit a short film for consideration from AGBO's Executive teams.[66] The virtual short film festival invites filmmakers from all countries to make a short movie in only 48 hours.[67] The first year of the festival received over 700 submissions from filmmakers in over 60 countries.[67]
In 2022, Joe Russo helped to found and fund, through AGBO, the inaugural annualInternational Film Festival of St Andrews in partnership with theUniversity of St Andrews in Scotland. The festival showcases international cinema and hosts workshops for filmmakers. AGBO remains the lead sponsor of the festival.[68]
