The route begins inAberdulais at the junction with theA4230 andA465 roads; it diverges northwards away from the A465 up theDulais Valley and crosses through the settlements ofCrynant,Ynysfforch,Seven Sisters,Onllwyn,Dyffryn Cellwen andBanwen where it has a junction with theA4221. The road then continues in a southeasterly direction along the Inter Valley Road to Glynneath where it again connects with theA465.
Welsh rugby internationalElli Norkett was killed in an accident on this road in 2017.[2]
