The A40 linksDerry in the North West ofNorthern Ireland toRaphoe inCounty Donegal.[1]
The A40 commences in the city centre ofDerry on the west bank of theRiver Foyle and is connected withA2 at the Foyleside Roundabout.[2] The A2 continues at a higher elevation along John Street running parallel to the A40 along Foyle Road and travelling under theCraigavon Bridge, whilst theA2 spans the bridge over theFoyle on the higher level to the east bank to the Waterside andDerry~Londonderry railway station and around the Ulster coast line. The lower deck of theCraigavon Bridge has connections with theA5 along Victoria Road on the east bank toStrabane andOmagh. The two decks of the double deckCraigavon Bridge are both called Bridge Street, and the lower deck did have railway track linking the lines that served the city for goods trains. The Craigavon Bridge is anunderbridge in terms of the A40, and anoverbridge in terms of the A2.[3]
The A40 then continues with theFoyle Valley Railway on the left and thenarrow gauge railway track slowly diverging following the gentle meanders ofRiver Foyle. Housing mainly on the right after a mini roundabout becoming the Letterkenny Road gaining a higher alignment with the countryside andrailway line along the tree lined shore in the valley. Over the Foyle is theA5 whilst the A40 moves west inland into farmland and diverges from the Letterkenny RoadB193 at Nixons Corner. TheB193 toNewtown Cunningham and the A40 turns southwestward along Mullenan Road and crosses fromNorthern Ireland intoCounty Donegal and then becoming theR236 and running viaCarrigans and at Dundee theR265 designation brings the road toSt Johnston until Tullyowen before reverting to theR236 linking withRaphoe.[4]
