Fall – EmperorBasil II, supported by a contingent of 6,000Varangians (the futureVarangian Guard), organizes the defences ofConstantinople to meet a threat from the insurgents,Bardas Phokas the Younger andBardas Skleros. Basil crosses theBosphorus, and leads a surprise attack on the rebel camp ofKalokyros Delphinas, atChrysopolis. Delphinas is captured and executed, either bycrucifixion or byimpalement (approximate date).

April 1 – 16-year oldRobert II of France ("Robert the Pious") is married to the much olderRozala (the widow ofArnulf II). Themarriage is arranged by Robert's father, KingHugh Capet, to secure the loyalty of theCounty of Flanders.
Borrell II, count ofBarcelona, does not renew his allegiance to Hugh Capet. He becomes ade facto independent ruler, and starts minting its own currency – this will be confirmed legally by theTreaty of Corbeil (1258).
