The82nd Golden Globe Awards was an annual awards ceremony forexcellence in film andAmerican television productions of 2024. The winners were revealed during the live telecast, aired onCBS on January 5, 2025. The event was hosted by comedianNikki Glaser, making her the first solo female host in Golden Globes history.[2]

The nominations were announced live on December 9, 2024, at apress conference atThe Beverly Hilton by actorsMorris Chestnut andMindy Kaling, following an introduction from Golden Globes president, Helen Hoenhe.[3]Emilia Pérez, with 10 nominations, became the most nominated comedy/musical film inGolden Globes history, just 1 shy of the overall record of 11, set byRobert Altman'scountry musicsatireNashville in the drama category in1976.[4]The Brutalist received the second-most in film with 7 nominations, followed byConclave with 6.[5] Additionally,The Bear led the television nominations with 5, followed byOnly Murders in the Building andShōgun with 4 each.[6]

Ceremony information

On August 28, 2024, comedianNikki Glaser was announced as the host for this year's ceremony, following last year's widely criticized host, comedianJo Koy.[2] She is the first woman to host the Golden Globes solo.[7] Glaser herself was nominated forBest Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television for herHBO comedy special,Nikki Glaser: Someday You'll Die,[8] but lost toAli Wong.[9]

The ceremony was held at 5:00 p.m.PST / 8:00 p.m.EST on January 5, 2025. It was broadcast live onCBS and streaming onParamount+.[3]Glenn Weiss andRicky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment returned from last year to executive produce the ceremony, along withDick Clark Productions.[3]

On December 3, 2024, it was announced that the two Lifetime Achievement Awards, which were not presented last year, would return this year; however, they were presented during an untelevised gala dinner on January 3, 2025, prior to the telecast, similar to theAcademy Awards'Governors Awards.[8] The recipient of theCecil B. DeMille Award wasViola Davis, while theCarol Burnett Award was awarded toTed Danson.[10]

Emilia Pérez starKarla Sofía Gascón was the firsttrans nominee for a Golden Globe motion picture acting category, for theBest Actress in a Musical or Comedy category.[11]Jacques Audiard, the director and writer of the film, was one of the most nominated individuals, with a total of three nominations:Best Director,Best Screenplay, and co-lyricist ofBest Original Song nominee "El Mal".[6] The composers and co-lyricists of the song,Camille andClément Ducol, tied Audiard for most nominated individuals. Aside from "El Mal", they were also jointly nominated for composingEmilia Pérez'sBest Original Score and an additional Best Original Song nominee: "Mi Camino".[6]

This year's nominations were tabulated byKPMG, the U.S. audit, tax, and advisory firm.[3]Netflix received a total of 36 nominations between film and television, the most of any distributor.[12]

Emilia Pérez is the first non-English-language film (with some parts of English in the film) to winBest Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.Flow is the firstLatvian film to winBest Animated Feature Film.[13]Fernanda Torres became the firstBrazilian actress to win a Golden Globe in an acting category:Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.[14] She acknowledged her motherFernanda Montenegro's nomination in the same category at the56th Golden Globe Awards, forCentral Station (1998).[14]

Emilia Pérez andShōgun were the biggest winners of the night, for film and television, respectively, with four wins each.[15]The Brutalist was the next biggest film recipient, with three wins; for television,Baby Reindeer andHacks each won two.[15]
