The71st annualVenice International Film Festival , was held from 27 August to 6 September 2014, atVenice Lido inItaly.[1]

French composerAlexandre Desplat was the jury president for the main competition.[2] Italian actressLuisa Ranieri hosted the opening and closing nights of the festival.[3] TheGolden Lion was awarded toA Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence byRoy Andersson.[4]

American editorThelma Schoonmaker and American filmmakerFrederick Wiseman were the recipients of theGolden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.[5]

The festival poster paid tribute toFrançois Truffaut, as it featured the character ofAntoine Doinel portrayed byJean-Pierre Léaud from Truffaut's 1959 drama filmThe 400 Blows.[6][7]

The festival opened withBirdman byAlejandro G. Iñárritu, and closed withThe Golden Era byAnn Hui.[8][9]

The following films were the Special Screenings of the Official Selection:[26]

  • 9x10 novanta, by various Italian directors. A film composed of footages from the Luce Archives, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Luce Institute. It was presented in collaboration with Venice Days (see also section below).[27]
  • Taipei Factory II by Hou Chi-Jan, Cho Li, and Hsieh Chun-Yi (Chinese Taipei)[28]
