March 25 – EmperorTheodosios III is deposed after a reign of 1 year and 10 months. He is succeeded by the 32-year-oldLeo III the Isaurian, a general (strategos) of theAnatolic Theme (modernTurkey). Theodosios and his son enter theclergy, and he probably becomesbishop ofEphesus. Leo brings an end to theTwenty Years' Anarchy in theByzantine Empire, which marks the beginning of the so-calledIsaurian Dynasty.^[1]^[2]^[3]
Arab–Byzantine War: Muslim generalMaslama ibn Abd al-Malik leads his army of 80,000 men fromPergamum toAbydos, where he crosses theHellespont. To prevent interference by theBulgars, or by any Byzantine forces inThrace, he sends part of his army to a covering position nearAdrianople; with his main body, Maslama buildssiege lines to blockadeConstantinople, which is protected by the massiveTheodosian Walls.
August 15 –Siege of Constantinople: Maslama begins a combined land and sea effort to capture Constantinople. The capital controls theBosporus, access between theMediterranean andBlack Sea, and is defended by agarrison of roughly 25,000 men. Leo III orders thegranaries be restocked andsiege engines installed. The Arab besiegers are suffering immense losses due todisease, and from attrition ofsiege warfare.
September 1 – A Muslimarmada, consisting of 1,800 ships commanded by Admiral Suleiman, sails into theSea of Marmara and drops anchor below the sea walls of Constantinople, to supply their forces ashore. Leo III orders theByzantine fleet to sally forth from their protectedharbors withGreek fire, setting alight the thickly-packed Muslim ships. Many vessels burst into flames, while others collide with each other before sinking.^[4]
Fall –Basil Onomagoulos, Byzantine official, declares himself rival emperor inSicily after the news arrives that Constantinople has fallen to an Arabsiege. Leo III dispatches achartoularios named Paul, with imperial instructions for the Byzantine army on the island. Basil is arrested and executed; his head is sent to Leo, while the other rebels aremutilated andexiled.

Western Europe

March 21 –Battle of Vincy:Charles Martel invadesNeustria and defeats the forces of KingChilperic II atVincy, nearCambrai. He pursues him and his mayor of the palaceRagenfrid toParis, before turning back to deal with his stepmotherPlectrude atCologne, to turn over half the wealth of his late fatherPepin of Herstal. Charles allows both Plectrude and his nephewTheudoald (who at eleven was still a little child) to live (a gesture uncommon for the time), and obliges her to accept his sovereignty.
Charles Martel consolidates his power, proclaimsClotaire IV king ofAustrasia in opposition to Chilperic, and deposesRigobert, bishop ofReims, replacing him withMilo. He marches againstRadbod, king (orduke) of theFrisians, and pushes him back into his territory (later part of theNetherlands). Charles sends theSaxons back over theWeser River, and secures theRhine border—in the name of Clotaire.
Paolo Lucio Anafesto dies after a 20-year reign, and is succeeded byMarcello Tegalliano as the seconddoge of theRepublic of Venice.

Arabian Empire

CaliphSulayman ibn Abd al-Malik dies after a 2-year reign, and is succeeded by his cousinUmar II. During his rule he grantstax exemption, and tries to reorganize theUmayyad finances.
A Muslim expedition underAl-Hurr ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Thaqafi cross thePyrenees intoAquitanian territory, leading a small raiding party intoSeptimania (SouthernFrance).

December 24 – A destructiveearthquake, with six months of aftershocks, affectsSyria andMesopotamia.^[5]
