The host wasRicky Gervais, for the third consecutive year.[1] The musical theme for the year was composed byYoshiki, leader of the Japanese bandX Japan.[2] The nominations were announced byWoody Harrelson,Sofía Vergara,Gerard Butler andRashida Jones on December 15, 2011.[3] Multiple winners for the night included the silent filmThe Artist which won three awards andThe Descendants winning two awards. Freshman television seriesHomeland also won two awards.[4][5]
