653 Berenike is amain-beltasteroid discovered on 27 November 1907 byJoel Hastings Metcalf atTaunton, Massachusetts.[1] It is named afterBerenice II ofEgypt, after whom the constellationComa Berenices is also named. The name may have been inspired by the asteroid's provisional designation1907 BK.

Berenike is a member of the dynamicEos family of asteroids that most likely formed as the result of a collisional breakup of a parent body.[8]
