EmperorMaurice refuses to payransom for 12,000Byzantine soldiers taken prisoner by theAvars. Their leaderBayan I orders the execution of the prisoners, and slaughters them all. His failure to buy back the captives destroys Maurice's popularity with the Byzantine troops in theBalkan Peninsula.^[1]
Summer –Balkan Campaign: The Byzantine generalsPriscus andComentiolus join their forces atSingidunum (modernBelgrade), and move downstream to the fortress city ofViminacium (Serbia). TheByzantines cross theDanube River and invadeUpper Moesia, where they defeat the Avars inopen battle.
Priscus pursues the fleeing Avar tribes and invades their homeland inPannonia. He devastates the land east of theTisza River, deciding the war for the Byzantines and ending the Avar andSlavic incursions across the Danube.
Autumn – Comentiolus reopens theGate of Trajan pass, nearIhtiman (Bulgaria). This strategic mountain pass, whose fortress"Stipon" defends the border between the provincesThrace andMacedonia, is not used for decades.
