Byzantine–Sassanid War: APersian army under KingKhosrau I breaks through theCaucasus intoAnatolia (modernTurkey). They attack the cities ofTheodosiopolis andCaesarea, but are thwarted. Khosrau is forced to retreat and sacksSebasteia. On the way home, he is intercepted by aByzantine force underJustinian (magister militum of the East), and severelydefeated near Melitene. The royalbaggage is captured, and many Persians drown, while escaping across theEuphrates.^[1]

Baduarius, son-in-law of theByzantine emperorJustin II, is sent toItaly to resist theLombard conquest. He leads an aborted counter-assault against theLombards and dies soon after.^[2]
