547 Praxedis, provisional designation1904 PB, is a Postremianasteroid from the central regions of theasteroid belt, approximately 52 kilometers in diameter.

Description

[edit]

The asteroid was discovered on 14 October 1904, by astronomerPaul Götz at theHeidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany.[2] It was named from literature after the character "Praxedis" inJoseph Victor von Scheffel's historical romanceEkkehard (1855). The official naming citation was mentioned inThe Names of the Minor Planets byPaul Herget in 1955 (H 58).

Praxedis is a member of thePostrema family (541),[4] a mid-sized centralasteroid family of little more than 100 members.[5]: 23  It orbits the Sun in thecentral main-belt at a distance of 2.1–3.4 AU once every 4 years and 8 months (1,690 days). Its orbit has aneccentricity of 0.24 and aninclination of 17° with respect to theecliptic.[1]

In theTholen classification,Praxedis has an ambiguousspectral type, closest to anX-type and somewhat similar to that of a darkerD-type asteroid. In theSMASS classification it is a Xk-subtype that transitions from the X- to the rareK-type asteroids.[1] According to the survey carried out by NASA'sWide-field Infrared Survey Explorer,Praxedis measures 52.462 kilometers in diameter and its surface has analbedo of 0.101.[1]
