The52nd annualBerlin International Film Festival was held from February 6 to 17, 2002.[2] The festival opened withHeaven byTom Tykwer.[3][4] The new print ofCharlie Chaplin's 1940 American satiricaldramedy filmThe Great Dictator was the closing film of the festival.[5]

TheGolden Bear was jointly awarded toBloody Sunday, directed byPaul Greengrass, andSpirited Away, byHayao Miyazaki.[6]

The Retrospective section was dedicated to European films from the 1960s.[7]Dieter Kosslick became the director of the festival, taking over fromMoritz de Hadeln.[8]
