The50th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, consisting of theUnited States Senate and theUnited States House of Representatives . It met inWashington, D.C. , from March 4, 1887, to March 4, 1889, during the last two years ofGrover Cleveland 'sfirst presidency . The presidentvetoed 212 pieces of legislation, the greatest number in a single session of Congress.
The apportionment of seats in theHouse of Representatives was based on the1880 United States census . The Senate had aRepublican majority, and the House had aDemocratic majority.
