The4th Regiment of Marines was amarine regiment of theBritish Army which saw service between 1739 and 1748. It served during theWar of Jenkins' Ear and fought at theBattle of Cartagena de Indias.
The 4th Regiment of Marines was raised on 17 November 1739 asJohn Wynyard's Regiment of Marines.[1] Following the 18th century tradition of naming British regiments for theircolonel, the regiment was renamed asByng's Regiment of Marines in 1742.[1]
The regiment embarked fromPortsmouth on 4 November 1740en route for theWest Indies for service in theWar of Jenkins' Ear.[1] It fought at theBattle of Cartagena de Indias in March 1741.[2] The regiment was ranked as the 47th regiment of the line in 1747 and was also known as the4th Marines.[1]
The regiment was disbanded on 8 November 1748 when the British Army disbanded its marine regiments.[1] The final commander of the 4th Marines was ColonelJames Long.[3]
