The4th Empire Awards ceremony, presented by the Britishfilm magazineEmpire, honored the bestfilms of 1998 and took place in 1999 at thePark Lane Hotel inLondon,England.[1] During the ceremony,Empire presentedEmpire Awards in nine categories as well as three honorary awards. The honorary Movie Masterpiece award was first introduced this year. The awards were sponsored byStella Artois for the second consecutive year.[2]

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,Titanic andSaving Private Ryan were tied for most awards won with two awards apiece.Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels won the award forBest British Film, whileTitanic won the award forBest Film. Other winners includedElizabeth,My Name Is Joe andSliding Doors with one award apiece.Spike Lee received theEmpire Inspiration Award,Freddie Francis received the Lifetime Achievement Award andWilliam Friedkin received the Movie Masterpiece Award forThe Exorcist.
