The denomination 488 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when theAnno Dominicalendar era became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years.

  • According to theAnglo-Saxon Chronicle,Hengist dies and is succeeded by his sonOisc as king ofKent.
  • Among the peoples who live on the south bank of theDanube inNoricum ripense and who arede facto ruled by theRugii, whose empire has its centre nearKrems on the north bank, are Romii who had been evacuated earlier from Danube settlements above theRiver Enns. They include members of theSeverinconvent.
