The34thNAACP Image Awards, presented by theNAACP, honored outstanding representations and achievements ofpeople of color in motion pictures, television, music, and literature during the 2002 calendar year. The ceremony was hosted byCedric the Entertainer and took place on March 8, 2003, at theUniversal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. It aired a few days later on March 13, 2003, on theFox network.[1][2][3]
The nominations were announced on December 5, 2002, at ThePacific Design Center in Hollywood, California. BothBrown Sugar andBarbershop, which received eight and five nominations respectively, failed to win any awards on the night.[4][5] The nomination ofBarbershop was seen as a somewhat controversial choice.[6][7]
