EmperorMaximinus Daza (r. 310–313)

Year313 (CCCXIII) was acommon year starting on Thursday of theJulian calendar. At the time, it was known as theYear of the Consulship of Constantinus and Licinianus (or, less frequently,year 1066Ab urbe condita). The denomination 313 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when theAnno Domini calendar era became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years. This year is notable for ending of the persecution ofChristians in theRoman Empire.

At the end of 312 or in early 313, the retired EmperorDiocletian dies in his palace inSplit, most likely from natural causes.
February: EmperorsConstantine I andLicinius convene inMediolanum (modernMilan). Licinius marries Constantine's half-sisterConstantia, and they issue theEdict of Milan. This edict ends theGreat Persecution against theChristians and is the first piece of legislation in western history to decreefreedom of religion. It also returns property confiscated from Christians.^[1] The edict is posted inNicomedia on June 13.
EmperorMaximinus Daza crosses theBosphorus with an army of 70,000 men and lays siege toHeraclea inThrace. He captures the city after eight days.
Battle of Tzirallum: Licinius defeats his rival Maximinus in Thrace, who then flees toCilicia. After losing theCilician Gates to Licinius' forces, Maximinus commits suicide.
Licinius conducts a purge of the wider Tetrarchic dynasty. He executesGalerius' sonCandidianus,Valerius Severus' sonSeverianus (whom he accuses of conspiracy), and Maximinus' wife, son and daughter. Diocletian's wifePrisca and daughterGaleria Valeria go into hiding.

Nintoku, the fourth son ofŌjin, becomes the16th emperor ofJapan. The historical profile of Nintoku is generally accepted as fact without attributing all of the things he allegedly accomplished.^[2]
