Aging giant star in the constellation of Orion
29 Orionis is a single[ 10] star located around 157[ 1] light years away from the Sun in theequatorial constellation ofOrion . In Bayer'sUranometria , this star is one of two stars (the other beingUpsilon Orionis ) marking the top of Orion's right boot.[ 11] It has theBayer designation e Orionis , while29 Orionis is theFlamsteed designation . This object is visible to the naked eye as a faint, yellow-hued point of light with anapparent visual magnitude of 4.13.[ 2] It is moving closer to the Earth with a heliocentricradial velocity of -18 km/s.[ 5]
This is an aginggiant star with astellar classification of G8IIIFe-0.5,[ 3] having exhausted the supply of hydrogen at itscore andevolved away from themain sequence . The suffix notation indicates a mild underabundance of iron in thespectrum . It is ared clump giant,[ 12] which means it is on thehorizontal branch and is generating energy throughhelium fusion at its core. The star is 1.42 billion years old, has 1.82 times themass of the Sun and has expanded to 11.53 times theSun's radius . It is radiating 70 times theSun's luminosity from its enlargedphotosphere at aneffective temperature of 4,920 K.[ 7]
