The2025 Virginia elections took place throughout 2025— the general election was held on November 4, 2025, to elect thegovernor ,lieutenant governor , andattorney general of Virginia. All 100 seats in theHouse of Delegates were up for election. Primary elections took place on June 17, 2025, while the in-personearly voting period ran from September 19 to November 1, 2025.[ 1] There were several special elections throughout 2025 in the House of Delegates,Virginia Senate , andU.S. House of Representatives in Virginia.
Ultimately, theDemocratic Party won all three statewide executive offices and expanded their slim majority in the House of Delegates by thirteen seats to a 64-36 majority which created a Democratic trifecta inVirginia's government for the first time since2019 .[ 2]
On January 7, 2025, special elections were held forthe 32nd Senate district ,the 10th Senate district , andthe 26th House of Delegates district .[ 3]
10th Senate district [ edit ] FollowingJohn McGuire 's election toVirginia's 5th congressional district , a special election was held to replace his seat forVirginia's 10th Senate district .[ 4] A Republicanprimary election was held on December 13, 2024.[ 5]
32nd Senate district [ edit ] FollowingSuhas Subramanyam 's election toVirginia's 10th congressional district , a special election was held to replace his seat forVirginia's 32nd Senate district .[ 4] Democratic and Republican partyprimary elections were held on November 16, 2024.[ 6]
26th House of Delegates district [ edit ] FollowingKannan Srinivasan 's victory in the Democratic primary special election forVirginia's 32nd Senate district , a special election was held to replace his seat forVirginia's 26th House of Delegates district . Republican and Democratic primary elections were held on November 18, 2024, and November 23, 2024, respectively.[ 7]

11th congressional district [ edit ] Following the death ofGerry Connolly , a special election forU.S. representative for Virginia's11th congressional district was held on September 9, 2025.[ 8]
IncumbentRepublican governorGlenn Youngkin wasineligible to run for re-election, as theConstitution of Virginia prohibits its governors from serving consecutive terms. Former U.S. RepresentativeAbigail Spanberger was the Democratic nominee and Lieutenant GovernorWinsome Earle-Sears was the Republican nominee.[ 10] Spanberger defeated Earle-Sears by 15.36% points.[ 11]
Lieutenant governor [ edit ] IncumbentRepublican Lieutenant GovernorWinsome Earle-Sears did not run for re-election to a second term in office, instead choosing torun for governor . Democratic Party primary elections took place on June 17, 2025.[ 12] State Senator Ghazala Hashmi was the Democratic nominee and former radio host John Reid is the Republican nominee.[ 13] [ 14] Hashmi defeated Reid by 11.65% points.[ 15]
IncumbentRepublican Attorney General,Jason Miyares , ran for re-election, but lost toDemocratic nomineeJay Jones by 6.68% points.[ 16] [ 17]
All 100 seats in theVirginia House of Delegates were up for election. The chamber had been controlled by the Democratic Party, holding a majority of two seats.[ 18] Primary elections took place on June 17, 2025.[ 12]
TheVirginia Senate is not up for election until 2027.
The landslide victories for Democrats causedinternal fighting among Virginian Republicans. The scale of Democratic victory was unexpected both for Republicans and Democrats.[ 19] [ 20]
