The2025 Japanese Grand Prix (officially known as theFormula 1 Lenovo Japanese Grand Prix 2025) was aFormula One motor race held on 6 April 2025 at theSuzuka International Racing Course inSuzuka, Japan. It was the third round of the2025 Formula One World Championship.

Max Verstappen ofRed Bull Racing took pole position for the race, which he went on to win, with the twoMcLarens ofLando Norris andOscar Piastri completing the podium.Kimi Antonelli ofMercedes broke two records and became the youngest driver in Formula 1 history tolead laps andset the fastest lap.

Background

The event was held at theSuzuka International Racing Course inSuzuka for the 35th time in the circuit's history, across the weekend of 4–6 April.[3] The Grand Prix was the third round of the2025 Formula One World Championship and the 39th running of theJapanese Grand Prix as a round of the Formula One World Championship.[4]

This race wasScuderia Ferrari's 1100th start in a World Championship event as a team.[5]

Championship standings before the race

Going into the event,Lando Norris led theDrivers' Championship with 44 points, 8 points ahead ofMax Verstappen in second, and 9 ahead ofGeorge Russell in third.McLaren, with 78 points, entered the race as the leader in theConstructors' Championship fromMercedes in second with 57 points, andRed Bull Racing third with 36 points.[6]

The drivers and teams were the same as published in the season entry list with one exception.[7]Liam Lawson, who previously raced forRed Bull Racing, swapped teams withYuki Tsunoda ofRacing Bulls. Tsunoda made his Red Bull Racing debut.[8]Ryō Hirakawa took part in the first free practice session forAlpine in place ofJack Doohan.[9]

Tyre supplierPirelli brought the C1, C2, and C3 tyre compounds (the three hardest in their range) designated hard, medium, and soft, respectively, for teams to use at the event.[10]

Grass fires prompted severalred flag periods throughoutfree practice.

Threefree practice sessions were held for the event.[1] The first free practice session was held on 4 April 2025, at 11:30 local time (UTC+9), and was topped byLando Norris ofMcLaren ahead ofGeorge Russell ofMercedes, andCharles Leclerc ofFerrari.[11] The second free practice session was held on the same day, at 15:00 local time, and was topped byOscar Piastri of McLaren ahead of his teammate Norris andIsack Hadjar ofRacing Bulls. Four red flags were observed, heavily disrupting the session: the first due toJack Doohan ofAlpine crashing heavily into the barriers at turn 1, the second due toFernando Alonso ofAston Martin spinning into the gravel around the Degner corners, and the final two due to two separate grass fires.[12]

The third free practice session was held on 5 April 2025, at 11:30 local time, and was topped by Norris ahead of his teammate Piastri and Russell. Two more patches of grass, this time at turns 12 and 15, respectively, caught fire, facilitating two red flags.[13]
