Summary

[edit]

August
Newly appointed managerRyan Mason began his Albion tenure with an opening day clash at home toBlackburn. The hosts started brightly, grabbing the lead fifteen minutes in throughIsaac Price. Albion held on in the second half, despiteDarnell Furlong's red card, to win 1–0.[56] The Baggies were in action just three days later in theEFL Cup, and were knocked out on penalties at theHawthorns byDerby County.Aune Heggebø scored his first goal for the club in the second half, butJoe Ward equalised right at the death and the Rams won the subsequent shoot-out 3–2 to knock Albion out in the first round for the third year in a row.[57] The first away day of the season was a trip to newly promotedWrexham, with ownersRyan Reynolds andRob McElhenney watching on.Isaac Price scored again to give Albion the lead, but the hosts hit back throughLewis O'Brien just before half-time. SubstitutesMikey Johnston andJed Wallace combined to give the Baggies the lead in the second half, beforePrice grabbed his second to make 1–3.Sam Smith pulled one back forWrexham late on, but it wasn't enough to stop Albion making it back-to-back victories to start the league campaign.[58] Next up for the Baggies wasPortsmouth at theHawthorns, and it ended in a controversial 1–1 draw.Mikey Johnston gave the hosts a first half lead, butColby Bishop equalised forPortsmouth just after the interval. Albion were denied a penalty for what seemed to be a clear foul onAune Heggebø, and then saw a stonewall red card not be given moments later, withRyan Mason sent off for his protests.[59]Mason then had to watch from the stands as they won 0–1 away atStoke, withNat Phillips heading Albion into 2nd place going into the first international break.[60]

September
West Bromwich Albion celebrated 125 years at theHawthorns on the 13 September at home toDerby County, but the visitors spoiled the party with a lateAndi Weimann strike.[61] A long trip up toTeesside awaited the Baggies on the following Friday, against aMiddlesbrough side top of theChampionship table. Boro took lead through defenderDavid Strelec, beforeKaly Sène doubled the lead on the hour mark.Aune Heggebø pulled one back late on, but it wasn't enough asMiddlesbrough took all three points.[62] Next up for Albion wasLeicester City under the Friday night lights at theHawthorns.Samuel Iling-Junior made his full debut, and ten minutes in scored a wonderful solo goal. Albion had multiple chances to kill the game off, but didn't take them and were made to pay whenNat Phillips put the ball in his own net in stoppage time.[63]

October
Norwich City in midweek were next up, having lost all of their home games so far.Josh Maja's first goal of the season was enough to earn all three points on the road, asNorwich's poor run atCarrow Road continued.[64] Albion were then well beaten at theDen, withMillwall running out 3–0 winners.Jake Cooper gave the hosts a first half lead, beforeFemi Azeez andZak Sturge extended their advantage in the second half.[65] The Baggies returned home from the international break with a promising 2–1 victory overPreston.Mikey Johnston andIsaac Price put Albion 2–0 up, and held on despite a lateMichael Smith consolation.[66] They were unable to build on the victory however, falling to a 2–1 defeat atVicarage Road the following Wednesday.Price scored again to give the Baggies the lead, butWatford turned it round throughImran Louza andRocco Vata.[67] Albion then lost on the road again, withJack Clarke pouncing on a late mistake to win the game forIpswich Town.[68]

November
The poor run of form continued with a goalless draw at home toSheffield Wednesday, who had recently enteredadministration and had been deducted 12 points.[69] Albion performed better againstCharlton, andJosh Griffiths saved a first half penalty, but they conceded a last minuteSonny Carey winner to ramp up the pressure onRyan Mason.[70] The Baggies did manage to end the poor run with 2–1 comeback win overOxford United. Will Lankshear put the visitors in front, butGreg Leigh put the ball in his own net 2 minutes later to equalise.Aune Heggebø then came off the bench to score the winner twenty minutes from time.[71]
