Summary

[edit]

The first managerial departure of the season came on 9 September 2025, whenNottingham Forest sackedNuno Espírito Santo as his relationship with ownerEvangelos Marinakis had deteriorated.[3] He was swiftly replaced the same day, by formerTottenham Hotspur managerAnge Postecoglou, who signed a two-year contract with the club.[4]

The second managerial departure came on 27 September 2025, whenWest Ham United sackedGraham Potter after a string of bad results in the last half of the previous season and the start of the new season, amassing only one win in five in the Premier League, and losing the other four games.[5] On the same day, Potter was replaced by recently sacked manager Nuno Espírito Santo.[6]

The third managerial departure came on 18 October 2025, when Nottingham Forest sacked Ange Postecoglou 20 minutes after a 0–3 home loss toChelsea, and after only 39 days in charge, following a run of extremely poor results, where Postecoglou had failed to win all eight of his matches in charge of Nottingham Forest.[7] Postecoglou was replaced by formerBurnley andEverton managerSean Dyche on 21 October 2025.[8]

The fourth managerial departure came on 2 November 2025, whenWolverhampton Wanderers sackedVítor Pereira following an extremely poor run of results in the Premier League, where they lost eight out of 10 games, with two draws, as well as being rock-bottom in the league, being in 20th for almost the entirety of the season.Rob Edwards was named as his successor and Wolves were 20th at the time of the managerial change.[9]

The fifth managerial departure came on 1 January 2026 whenEnzo Maresca leftChelsea following a run of one win in 7 league games and a reported breakdown in relations between manager and ownership over the structure of the club.[10] The club was 5th at the time of his departure.[11] On January 6th,Liam Rosenior was appointed as Maresca's replacement.

The sixth managerial departure came on 5 January 2026 whenManchester United sackedRuben Amorim following his dispute with the club's recruitment department. The club were sixth at the time of his departure.[12] On 13 January,Michael Carrick was named as Amorim's successor, having hadDarren Fletcher as interim head coach in between.[13]

The seventh managerial departure came on 11 February 2026 whenTottenham Hotspur sackedThomas Frank following a run of two wins in 17 league games. The club were in 16th position at the time of his departure.[14] On 14 February 2026,Igor Tudor was announced as Frank's successor until the end of the season.[15]

The eighth managerial departure came on 12 February 2026 whenSean Dyche was sacked byNottingham Forest after less than four months in charge of the club following a goalless home draw to basement sideWolverhampton Wanderers, which left Forest 17th in the table.[16]

Developments

[edit]

This is the first full season with semi-automated offside technology in use, following its introduction during the previous season on 12 April 2025.[17][18]

Puma also replacedNike as the official match ball supplier, ending a 25-year partnership between the Premier League and Nike, from the2000–01 season to the2024–25 season.[19][20][21][22]. Ref-cam technology also appeared in selected matches during its opening round with a view to making the new technology a permanent feature of live TV games for the rest of the season.[23]

Teams

[edit]

Twenty teams are competing in the league: the top seventeen teams from the previous season and three promoted from theChampionship. The promoted clubs areLeeds United,Burnley, andSunderland, returning to the top flight after absences of two, one, and eight years, respectively. They replacedLeicester City,Ipswich Town, andSouthampton, who were relegated after a single season in the Premier League. This marked the second consecutive season, and only the third time in English top-flight history, in which all three promoted teams were relegated after just one season.[24]
