Washington state elections in 2024 were held on November 5, 2024.Primary elections were held on August 6, 2024.[ 1]
This was the first time since 1965 thatRepublicans have not held at least one executive office going into the election.
In the early hours of October 28, a ballot drop box inVancouver was found to be on fire damaging a number of ballots.[ 2] Police stated that a suspicious device had been found next to the box.[ 2]
President of the United States [ edit ] Washington has 12 electoral votes for thepresidential election , remaining unchanged from2020 .[ 3] A presidential primary for both parties was held on March 12, 2024.[ 4]
United States Senate [ edit ] Washington's Class 1U.S. Senate seat was up for election in2024 . Incumbent four-termDemocratic SenatorMaria Cantwell ran for re-election.[ 5]
United States House of Representatives [ edit ] All of Washington's seats in theUnited States House of Representatives were up for re-election. Incumbent RepresentativesDerek Kilmer (D) from the6th district andCathy McMorris Rodgers (R) from the5th district announced they would not seek re-election.[ 6] [ 7]
Statewide executive [ edit ] Incumbent three-termgovernor Jay Inslee (D) announced he would not seek re-election.[ 8] Democratic attorney general Bob Ferguson won the election overRepublican former congressmanDave Reichert .[ 9]
Lieutenant governor [ edit ] Incumbent one-termlieutenant governor Denny Heck (D) won re-election to a second term over Republican candidate Dan Matthews.[ 10] [ 11]
Incumbent three-termattorney general Bob Ferguson (D) announced he would not seek re-election and instead ran for governor.[ 12] Democratic former U.S. attorneyNick Brown won the election, defeatingRepublican mayor ofPasco Pete Serrano.[ 13]
Incumbentsecretary of state Steve Hobbs (D) was named to replace formersecretary of state Kim Wyman (R) who was re-elected to a third term in2020 , but resigned in 2021 to take a position in theBiden administration .[ 14] Hobbs won a2022 special election to fill the role, and announced that he would seek re-election to a first full term.[ 15] [ 10] Hobbs won the election the election decisively againstRepublican Dale Whitaker.[ 16]
Public Lands Commissioner [ edit ] Incumbent two-termPublic Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz (D) announced that she would not seek re-election and instead ran for theHouse of Representatives inWashington's 6th congressional district .[ 17] Democratic King County councilor Dave Upthegrove defeatedRepublican former congresswomanJaime Herrera Beutler .[ 18]
Incumbent two-termstate auditor Pat McCarthy (D) filed to run for re-election to a third term, despite there being speculation that she would retire.[ 10] McCarthy won re-election againstRepublican Matt Hawkins.[ 16]
Incumbent one-termstate treasurer Mike Pellicciotti (D) was the onlyDemocrat to defeat a statewideRepublican officeholder in Washington in2020 , defeatingState Treasurer Duane Davidson (R). Pellicciotti won re-election to a second term againstRepublican Sharon Hanek.[ 10] [ 16]
Superintendent of Public Instruction [ edit ] Incumbent two-termstate superintendent Chris Reykdal (non-partisan) won re-election to a third term, defeatingPeninsula School District board President David Olson.[ 19]
Insurance Commissioner [ edit ] Incumbent six-terminsurance commissioner Mike Kreidler (D) announced he will retire at the end of his term.[ 19] Democratic state senatorPatty Kuderer won the election against Republican state senatorPhil Fortunato .[ 20] [ 21]
Seats 2, 8, and 9 of theWashington Supreme Court were up for six-year terms. Chief JusticeSteven González , and JusticeSheryl Gordon McCloud were up for re-election and were re-elected unopposed.[ 22] In 2024,Susan Owens reached mandatory retirement and was not eligible to seek re-election.
Twenty-four of the forty-nine seats in theWashington State Senate were up for election. Democrats won a 30–19 majority in the Senate, a net gain of one seat compared with2022 .
State House of Representatives [ edit ] All 98 seats in theWashington House of Representatives were up for election. Democrats won a 59–39 majority in the House, a net gain of one seat compared with2022 .
