The2024 Oregon State Senate election was held in theU.S. state ofOregon on November 5, 2024, to elect 15 of the 30 members of theState Senate to the83rd Oregon Legislature.

Primary elections were held in several districts on May 21, 2024.[1] The election coincided with theelection of the other house of theLegislative Assembly, theOregon House of Representatives, andother elections.[2]

The Democrats regained the three-fifths supermajority in the Senate they had lost in the2022 elections.[3]

Background

[edit]

On August 8, 2023,Oregon Secretary of StateLaVonne Griffin-Valade announced that as per the recently passedOregon Ballot Measure 113, 10Republican senators who participated in walkouts earlier in the year are not eligible for re-election for the next term. Six of these senators are up for election in 2024.[4] Some of the senators filed a lawsuit against the secretary of state,[5] with theOregon Supreme Court eventually ruling unanimously that they could not be placed on the ballot in 2024 and 2026.[6]

Electoral system

[edit]

The 15 members of the Senate up for election were elected fromsingle-member districts viafirst-past-the-post voting for four-year terms.

Contested nominations of recognized major parties (Democratic andRepublican) for each district were determined by aprimary election on May 21, 2024.

Minor party candidates were nominated by petition.Write-in candidates must file a request with theSecretary of State's office for votes for them to be counted. Candidates for the state Senate in 2024 were required to file to run from September 14, 2023, to March 12, 2024.[7]
