The2023–24 Iraq Stars League was the 50th season of the highest tierfootball league inIraq since its establishment in 1974, and the first season since launching as a professional league under the nameIraq Stars League. The season started on 26 October 2023 and ended on 14 July 2024, with the post-season play-offs held from 19–24 July 2024.[1]

Al-Shorta won the league title for the third season in a row, sealing the title in the penultimate round of the season by defeatingDuhok 1–0. Al-Shorta also won theIraq FA Cup title to secure the domesticdouble.[2]

Overview

20 teams competed in the 2023–24 Iraq Stars League: 18 teams from the2022–23 Iraqi Premier League, as well asAl-Minaa andAmanat Baghdad who were promoted from the2022–23 Iraqi First Division League and both returned to the top tier after a one-year absence.[3][4]

  1. ^Since the winners of the2023–24 Iraq FA Cup, Al-Shorta, qualified for the AFC Champions League Elite based on league position, the AFC Champions League Two spot was passed to the league runners-up Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya.
  2. ^abAl-Najaf finished ahead of Zakho on head-to-head points: Zakho 1–1 Al-Najaf, Al-Najaf 2–1 Zakho.

Notes:
  1. ^The Al-Minaa–Al-Shorta match was awarded as a 3–0 win to Al-Shorta, as Al-Minaa started the game with only seven players and had their player Mohammed Khudhair go off injured in the eighth minute while Al-Shorta were leading 1–0.[6]
  2. ^The Al-Qasim–Naft Al-Basra match originally ended 0–0 but was changed to a 3–0 win for Al-Qasim due to Naft Al-Basra involving the player Qasim Mohammed, who had not been included in the squad list submitted for the match.[7]
  3. ^The Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya–Al-Qasim match was awarded as a 3–0 win to Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, after Al-Qasim withdrew from the game in protest at the referee awarding a penalty to Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya in the 32nd minute while the score was 0–0.[8]

Regional competition play-offs

The four teams that finished 3rd to 6th competed in a play-off tournament to decide Iraq's participant in the2024–25 AGCFF Gulf Club Champions League. If a match ended in a draw after 90 minutes, there would be no extra time played and the game would go straight to a penalty shootout.[9]

Relegation play-offs

The 17th and 18th-placed teams competed in a play-off, with the winner remaining in the Stars League and the loser advancing to the relegation play-off.

If the scores were level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time would be played. If the scores were still level after extra time, the 18th-placed team would advance to the relegation play-off due to their inferior league position.[9]

Relegation play-off

The loser of the play-out round competed in a play-off with the 3rd-placed team from thePremier Division League for a place in next season's Stars League. If the match ended in a draw after 90 minutes, there would be no extra time played and the game would go straight to a penalty shootout.[9]
