Iga Świątek defeatedOns Jabeur in the final, 6–2, 7–6(7–5) to win the women's singles tennis title at the2022 US Open. It was her firstUS Open title and thirdmajor title overall. Świątek was the first player sinceAngelique Kerber in2016 to win multiple majors in a season, having also won theFrench Open. She became the first Polish woman in theOpen Era to reach the US Open quarterfinals and beyond.[i] Świątek was the youngest woman to win three majors sinceMaria Sharapova in 2008.[1][2]
Emma Raducanu was the defending champion,[3] but lost in the first round toAlizé Cornet.[4] It was the third time the defending US Open champion lost in the first round, afterSvetlana Kuznetsova in2005 and Kerber in2017. This marked the second consecutive major where Cornet defeated a reigning major champion (following her victory over Świątek atWimbledon). Cornet made her 63rd consecutive major appearance, surpassingAi Sugiyama'sall-time record.[5]
This tournament marked the final professional appearance of 23-time singles major champion, Olympic singles gold medalist, and former world No. 1Serena Williams; she lost toAjla Tomljanović in the third round.[6] It was the longest match at a major in Williams' career, lasting three hours and five minutes.[7] With her victory over second-rankedAnett Kontaveit in the second round, Williams, at 40 years old, became the oldest player to defeat a top three opponent on theWTA Tour.
This tournament was also the final major appearance of two-time major champion and former world No. 1Simona Halep; she lost toDaria Snigur in the first round. Following the tournament, Halep served a provisional suspension for violations of anti-doping rules,[8] which ended in March 2024. She announced her retirement from professional tennis in 2025.
This tournament marked the first time in the Open Era that four Chinese women reached the third round of a major.[9]Elise Mertens had her streak of 18 consecutive major third round appearances broken after losing in the first round toIrina-Camelia Begu.
