Iga Świątek defeatedCoco Gauff in the final, 6–1, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the2022 French Open .[ 1] It was her secondFrench Open title and secondmajor title overall. With the win, Świątek extended her winning streak to 35 matches (dating to theQatar Open in February).[ 2] Świątek was the youngest winner of multiple majors sinceMaria Sharapova in 2006.[ 3]
Barbora Krejčíková was the defending champion,[ 4] but lost in the first round toDiane Parry . This marked only the third time in French Open history that the defending champion lost in the first round (afterAnastasia Myskina in2005 andJeļena Ostapenko in2018 ), and the record 15th consecutive unsuccessful French Open women's singles title defense since2007 .[ 5]
This was the first edition of the French Open since2004 to feature three Americans in the quarterfinals: Gauff,Jessica Pegula , andSloane Stephens .[ 6] Gauff was the youngest major finalist since Sharapova at the2004 Wimbledon Championships , and the youngest French Open finalist sinceKim Clijsters in2001 .[ 7] 17-year-oldLinda Nosková was the youngest qualifier to debut in the main draw sinceMichelle Larcher de Brito in2009 .[ 8] This marked only the second time in theOpen Era when just one of the top ten seeds reached the fourth round of a major, after the2018 Wimbledon Championships .[ 9]
This marked the final French Open appearance for2018 champion and former world No. 1Simona Halep . She lost toZheng Qinwen in the second round.
This was the first edition of the tournament to feature a final-set tiebreak.[ 10] When the score in a final set reached 6–6, the first player to reach 10 points and lead by at least two points won the set (and the match). The first women's singles main-draw match to feature the ten-point tie break was the first-round match betweenIrina-Camelia Begu andJasmine Paolini , with Begu emerging victorious.
