The2021–22 Serie A (known as theSerie ATIM for sponsorship reasons) was the 120th season of top-tier Italianfootball, the 90th in around-robin tournament, and the 12th since its organization under an own league committee, theLega Serie A.[2]AC Milan won the title after defeatingSassuolo 3–0 at theMapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore on 22 May 2022, the final matchday of the season.[3]

AC Milan's title marked their 19th league title in their history and their first since2011.Inter Milan, the defending champions, finished in second place, two points behind AC Milan.

Teams

Two teams,Venezia andSalernitana, both returned to theSerie A after historically long absences. Venezia defeatedCittadella in the final of the promotion playoffs to secure readmission into the top league for the first time in 19 years—since the 2001-2002 season.[4] Salernitana, meanwhile, were able to play their first Serie A match in 23 years, for the first time since 1999.[5]Empoli returned after a two-year absence.[6]

Crotone andBenevento were relegated to theSerie B after spending just one year each in the Serie A.Parma was relegated after a three-year stint.
