International football competition

The2021–22 CAF Confederation Cup (officially the2021–22TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup for sponsorship reasons)[1] was the 19th edition ofAfrica's secondary clubfootball tournament organized by theConfederation of African Football (CAF) under the currentCAF Confederation Cup title after the merger ofCAF Cup andAfrican Cup Winners' Cup.

Thedefending championsRaja Casablanca were unable to defend their title as they advanced to the group stage of thethat season's CAF Champions League. Thefinal was won byRS Berkane ofMorocco 5–4 onpenalties after a 1–1 draw after 120 minutes of regulation time againstOrlando Pirates andRS Berkane at theGodswill Akpabio International Stadium inUyo,Nigeria, capturing their second title in the process.

As winners, RS Berkane earned the right to play against the winners of the2021–22 CAF Champions League,Wydad Casablanca, in the2022 CAF Super Cup.[2]

Association team allocation

[edit]

All 54 CAF member associations may enter the competition, with the 12 highest ranked associations according to theirCAF 5-year ranking eligible to enter two teams in the competition.[2] As a result, theoretically a maximum of 68 teams could enter the tournament (plus 16 teams eliminated from the CAF Champions League which enter the play-off round) – although this level has never been reached.

For the 2020–21 season, CAF utilized the 2016–2020CAF 5-year ranking, which calculates points for each entrant association based on their clubs' performance over the previous 5 seasons in CAF's club competitions. The criteria for points are as follows:[3][4][5]

CAF Champions LeagueCAF Confederation Cup
Winners6 points5 points
Runners-up5 points4 points
Losing semi-finalists4 points3 points
Losing quarter-finalists (from 2017)3 points2 points
3rd place in groups2 points1 point
4th place in groups1 point0.5 point

The points are multiplied by a coefficient according to the year as follows:

  • 2020–21: x 5
  • 2019–20: × 4
  • 2018–19: × 3
  • 2018: × 2
  • 2017: × 1

Knockout stage

[edit]
Main article:2021–22 CAF Confederation Cup knockout stage

The mechanism of the draws for each round was as follows:

  • In the draw for the quarter-finals, the four group winners were seeded, and the four group runners-up were unseeded. The seeded teams were drawn against the unseeded teams, with the seeded teams hosting the second leg. Teams from the same group could not be drawn against each other, while teams from the same association can be drawn against each other.
  • In the draws for semi-finals, there were no seedings, and teams from the same group or the same association could be drawn against each other. As the draws for the quarter-finals and semi-finals were held together before the quarter-finals were played, the identity of the quarter-final winners was not known at the time of the semi-final draw.
