The2020 Texas House of Representatives elections took place as part of the biennialUnited States elections.Texas voters electedstate representatives in all 150 of the state house's districts.Primary elections were held in March 2020.[1] The winners of this election served in the87th Texas Legislature. Two seats changed hands, both in Harris County, one Democratic flip and one Republican flip, for no net change.[2]
In the2018 election, theTexas Democrats had a net gain of 12 seats from the opposingTexas Republicans.
In 2019,House SpeakerDennis Bonnen announced he would not seek reelection.[3]
In October 2020,The Washington Post identified this state election as one of eight whose outcomes could affectpartisan balance during post-censusredistricting.[4]
Analysts considered the Texas House to be competitive in the 2020 elections, with Republicans holding the advantage. Due to the large number of competitive seats, Democrats had an opening to win control of the chamber for the first time since2000, but they would have to win almost all of them.[5] Near election day, however, The Cook Political Report shifted their rating for the chamber to "Tossup" due to the heavy amount ofearly voting taking place in the state's urban areas in the leadup to the election.[6]
