The2019–20 season wasMotherwell's thirty-fifth consecutive season in the top flight of Scottish football, having been promoted from theScottish First Division at the end of the1984–85 season. After the season was postponed on 13 March by theScottish Football Association due to theCOVID-19 pandemic,[1] the season was curtailed on 18 May by theScottish Professional Football League, with Motherwell finishing the season in third place with a points per game ration of 1.5333, 0.0333 higher than fourth placedAberdeen.[2] In theLeague Cup, Motherwell where knocked out byHeart of Midlothian in the Second Round, whilstSt Mirren knocked Motherwell out of theScottish Cup by penalties in a Fifth Round Reply.
On 10 June, Motherwell announced the singing ofChris Long to a one-year contract, beginning when hisBlackpool expires on 30 June.[3]On 12 June, Motherwell announced that they had agreed a record transfer fee withCeltic for the transfer of midfielderDavid Turnbull, with the player given permission to discuss personal terms with Celtic.[4] On 27 June Motherwell announced that the transfer had fallen through during the medical, with Turnbull requiring preventive surgery on his knee.[5]On 2 July, Motherwell announced the signing ofDevante Cole on an initial six-month loan deal fromWigan Athletic.[6]On 8 July, Motherwell signedSherwin Seedorf to a two-year contract fromWolverhampton Wanderers.[7]On 12 July, Motherwell announced the signing ofChristian Ilić to a one-year contract.[8]
On 18 July, managerStephen Robinson and assistant managerKeith Lasley both agreed new contracts, keeping them at the club until the summer of 2022.[9] The following day,Rohan Ferguson moved toLinfield for the 2019/20 season.[10]
On 23 July,Allan Campbell signed an improved contract with Motherwell until the summer of 2021.[11]On 25 July, Motherwell announced the singing ofChristy Manzinga on a one-year contract, with the option of a second, fromSporting Châtelet.[12] The following day, 26 July,Danny Johnson moved toDundee for an undisclosed fee,[13] andReece McAlear moved toNorwich City for an undisclosed.[14]
On 2 September,Adam Livingstone joinedGreenock Morton on a season-long loan deal,[15]Craig Tanner declined a new contract from Motherwell and left the club,[16] andMark O'Hara joined on a season-long loan deal fromPeterborough United.[17]
On 12 September, Motherwell announced the signing ofBevis Mugabi on a contract until January 2020.[18]
On 20 September, Motherwell announced thatP. J. Morrison had joinedCowdenbeath on an emergency one-week loan deal.[19]
On 2 October, Motherwell announced that they had extended their contract withLiam Donnelly until the summer of 2022.[20]
On 22 November, Motherwell announced that they had extended their contract withBevis Mugabi until the summer of 2021.[21]
On 7 January, Motherwell announced thatTrevor Carson had signed a new contract with the club, until the summer of 2022.[22]On 13 January,Mikael Ndjoli joined Motherwell on loan fromAFC Bournemouth for the remainder of the season.[23]
On 15 January,Liam Grimshaw signed a new contract with Motherwell until the summer of 2022.[24]
On 23 January,David Devine joinedQueen of the South on loan for the remainder of the season.[25]
On 28 January,Ross Maciver signed a new contract with Motherwell, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2021.[26]
On 31 January,Casper Sloth left Motherwell by mutual consent,[27]Rolando Aarons joined the club on loan fromNewcastle United for the remainder of the season,[28] andJames Scott moved toHull City for an undisclosed fee.[29]
After returning to the club from his loan deal withGreenock Morton on 31 January,[30]Adam Livingstone joinedClyde on loan for the remainder of the season on 4 February.[31]
On 7 February, Motherwell announced the signing ofTony Watt on a contract until the end of the season.[32]
On 9 March, Motherwell announced the signing ofHarry Robinson on a contract until the end of the season.[33]
On 11 March,David Turnbull signed a one-year extension to his contract, keeping him at Motherwell until the summer of 2022.[34]
On 13 March, theScottish Football Association postponed all league fixtures until further notice due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.[35][1]

On 29 May, Motherwell announced thatTony Watt had signed a new contract with the club, for the2020–21 season.[36]
On 31 May, Motherwell announced thatRohan Ferguson,Mark Gillespie,Richard Tait,Peter Hartley,Christian Ilić,Adam Livingstone andChristy Manzinga were all leaving the club after their contracts expired, whilstCharles Dunne,Chris Long,Barry Maguire,P. J. Morrison, Harry Robinson and Yusuf Hussain have been offered new contracts with contracts due to expire too.[37]
