The2018 Mexican Grand Prix (formally known as theFormula 1 Gran Premio de México 2018) was aFormula One motor race held on 28 October 2018 at theAutódromo Hermanos Rodríguez inMexico City.[3] The race was the nineteenth round of the2018 Formula One World Championship and marked the 20th running of theMexican Grand Prix, and the 19th time that the race had been run as a World Championship event since the inaugural season in1950.[4]
Mercedes driverLewis Hamilton entered the round with a 70-point lead overFerrari'sSebastian Vettel in the World Drivers' Championship.[5] Vettel's team-mate,Kimi Räikkönen, was in third, a further 55 points behind.[5] In the World Constructors' Championship, Mercedes held a lead of 66 points over Ferrari, withRed Bull Racing a further 160 points behind in third place.[5]
The race was won byMax Verstappen (his second win of the season), while Lewis Hamilton finished in fourth position, thereby taking his fifth Drivers' World Championship.[6][7]
Daniel Ricciardo took pole position from teammateVerstappen and withHamilton in third.[8] This was Ricciardo's last pole position.[9]
Max Verstappen won the race after taking the lead on lap 1, his teammate Ricciardo bogged down badly at the start.[13] The twoFerraris ofVettel andRäikkönen completed the podium.[14]Lewis Hamilton's fourth-place finish was enough for him to claim the2018 WorldDrivers' Championship with two rounds to go.[14] Pole sitterRicciardo retired on lap 61, his eighth retirement of the year.[15] Nico Hülkenberg finished a fine 6th place ahead of Charles Leclerc, while Stoffel Vandoorne equalled his best finish of the season in 8th place.[16]
In the immediate aftermath of the race,Ricciardo insisted that his car was cursed and said that he "didn't see the point" in doing the final two races of the season.[17]
