The2017 PLA Day parade was amilitary parade atZhurihe Training Base inInner Mongolia, on 1 August 2017 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of founding of thePeople's Liberation Army (PLA) and theNanchang uprising that caused its founding.[1] The parade was the first one to be held outside ofBeijing since 1981 and the only one to date to only include military equipment and no marchpast. It also was the first organized event to be held on 1 August, which isPLA Day in China.[2]Central Military Commission (CMC) Chairman and Party General SecretaryXi Jinping inspected the troops whileCMC vice chairmanFan Changlong was the parade'smaster of ceremonies and GeneralHan Weiguo of theCentral Theater Command was parade commander. 12,000 troops participated in the parade dressed up in combat garb instead of the usualType 07full dress uniform. According to theMinister of National Defense, this was done to replicate troops in a "dust-covered battlefield atmosphere".[3][4]
A key cause for controversy was that during the parade when the flag of theChinese Communist Party was paraded ahead of theflag of China.Voice of America pointed out that this violated Article 15 of the Law of the Flag of China.[5] Network commentators in China saw this an inappropriate move.[6]
