The2016 United States presidential election in Idaho was held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, as part of the2016 United States presidential election in which all 50 states plus theDistrict of Columbia participated.Idaho voters chose electors to represent them in theElectoral College via a popular vote, pitting theRepublican nominee, businessmanDonald Trump, and running mateIndiana GovernorMike Pence againstDemocratic Party nominee, formerSecretary of StateHillary Clinton, and her running mate VirginiaSenatorTim Kaine. Idaho has four electoral votes in the Electoral College.[2]

Trump was expected to win Idaho; Idaho is a Republican stronghold that has not voted for a Democratic candidate for president sinceLyndon B. Johnson's national landslide in1964, and even then it was Johnson's narrowest victory in the nation, winning by less than 2%. Trump ultimately carried the state with 59.25% of the vote, while Clinton received 27.48%. Third-party candidateEvan McMullin carried 6.75% of the popular vote, making Idaho his second-strongest state, only after neighboringUtah. This may have been because McMullin had strong appeal toMormon voters, with McMullin doing best in theMormon corridor counties of Idaho.[3]

Trump got the lowest percentage of the vote for a Republican since1996, and Clinton got the lowest percentage for a Democrat since1984. As of the2024 presidential election, this is the last time thatTeton County voted Republican.
