The2016 San Jose City Council election took place on June 7, 2016, to elect five of the ten seats of theSan Jose City Council, with runoff elections taking place on November 8, 2016.[1][2] Runoffs only occurred if no candidate received more than 50% of the votes cast in the contest. Local elections inCalifornia are officially nonpartisan.[3] Each councilmember is term-limited after two consecutive terms in office.[4]

IncumbentAsh Kalra was elected to the 2nd district in2008 and2012. He was ineligible for reelection.

District 4

Kansen Chu was initially elected to the 4th district in a special election runoff in 2007,[21][22] and was subsequently reelected in2008 and2012. Chu resigned his City Council seat in 2014 before the end of his term after winning a seat in theState Assembly in the November 2014 general election. Manh Nguyen won the special election runoff in June 2015 for the remainder of Chu's term.[23]
