The2016 San Jose City Council election took place on June 7, 2016, to elect five of the ten seats of theSan Jose City Council , with runoff elections taking place on November 8, 2016.[ 1] [ 2] Runoffs only occurred if no candidate received more than 50% of the votes cast in the contest. Local elections inCalifornia are officially nonpartisan.[ 3] Each councilmember is term-limited after two consecutive terms in office.[ 4]
IncumbentAsh Kalra was elected to the 2nd district in2008 and2012 . He was ineligible for reelection.

Kansen Chu was initially elected to the 4th district in a special election runoff in 2007,[ 21] [ 22] and was subsequently reelected in2008 and2012 . Chu resigned his City Council seat in 2014 before the end of his term after winning a seat in theState Assembly in the November 2014 general election. Manh Nguyen won the special election runoff in June 2015 for the remainder of Chu's term.[ 23]
