The2016 Penn State Nittany Lions football team representedPennsylvania State University in the2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The team was led by third-year head coachJames Franklin and played its home games inBeaver Stadium inUniversity Park, Pennsylvania. They were a member of theBig Ten East Division of theBig Ten Conference. They lost toPitt andMichigan in early September but then had a winning streak that included signature victories overOhio State andWisconsin en route to a Big Ten championship. Despite their Big Ten title, the Nittany Lions just missed a playoff berth. They represented the Big Ten in the2017 Rose Bowl, losing toUSC on a last-second game winningfield goal.

Schedule

Penn State announced its 2016 football schedule on July 11, 2013. The 2016 schedule consisted of seven home and five away games in the regular season. The Nittany Lions hosted Big Ten foesIowa,Maryland,Michigan State,Minnesota, andOhio State, and traveled toIndiana,Michigan,Purdue, andRutgers.[1]

The team hosted two of the three non-conference games against theKent State Golden Flashes from theMid-American Conference (MAC),Pittsburgh Panthers from theAtlantic Coast Conference (ACC), and theTemple Owls from theAmerican Athletic Conference (AAC).
