2024 California Proposition 42, also known asProp 42 andPublic Access to Local Government Records Amendment, was aCalifornia ballot proposition intended to make it mandatory for local governments and government agencies to follow theCalifornia Public Records Act (CPRA) and theRalph M. Brown Act (Brown Act). These acts give the public the right to access public records and attend public meetings. It passed in the June2014 California election.[1] Supporters of the proposition included SenatorMark Leno (who sponsored the proposition in the legislature), SenatorDarrell Steinberg,[2] theOakland City Council,[3] theCalifornia Democratic Party, theCalifornia Republican Party, theCalifornia Newspaper Publishers Association and theCalifornia Labor Federation.[1] Opponents of the proposition included theGreen Party of California,[4] the California Tea Party Groups[5] and Rural County Representatives of California.[1]
