The2013–14 season wasOldham Athletic's 17th consecutive season in the third division of theEnglish football league system andLee Johnson's first full season as manager of the club.

TheLatics faced a summer of rebuilding on and off the pitch as 18 players were out of contract from the2012–13 season^[1] and work finally recommenced on the demolition of the old Broadway Stand in preparation for its replacement by the new North Stand.^[2]Dean Bouzanis,Robbie Simpson,Connor Hughes, Liam Jacob,Alex Cisak,Lee Croft andDan Taylor were all released at the end of the2012–13 season with new contracts handed toGlenn Belezika,Cliff Byrne,Connor Brown,David Mellor,James Tarkowski andKirk Millar as well as youngstersJoe Cooper,Chris Sutherland,Luke Simpson andDanny Gosset.^[3]Matt Smith opted to joinLeeds United after his impressive run of goals during the2012-13 FA Cup^[4] whileDean Furman joined former managerPaul Dickov atDoncaster Rovers andJean-Yves Mvoto joinedBarnsley.

In their place,Johnson signed wingersSidney Schmeltz^[5] andJames Dayton^[6] as well as strengthening the centre of midfield withAnton Rodgers^[7] and the permanent acquisition ofKorey Smith^[8] who had ended the previous season on loan atBoundary Park fromNorwich City. A trio of forwards were also recruited:Charlie MacDonald,^[9]Jonson Clarke-Harris^[10] and, following a protracted contract dispute withSwindon Town,Adam Rooney.^[11]Johnson signed goalkeeperMark Oxley on a season long loan fromHull City^[12] but his only defensive acquisition before the season began was the young Latvian centre back, Edijs Joksts.^[13] As a result, the season began with young midfielderDavid Mellor employed at centre back alongsideJames Tarkowski.^[14]

The season began positively forOldham with a 4–3 victory away atStevenage.^[15] This was followed by defeat at home toDerby in the first round of theCapital One Cup^[16] and a run of games in whichOldham were praised for their attractive style of play^[17] but ultimately achieved only 8 points from their first 10 league games.^[18] In the meantime, the summer transfer window had closed with the departure ofBaxter toSheffield United for an undisclosed fee,^[19] the return ofDanny Philliskirk^[20] and the arrival of defensive duoMatteo Lanzoni^[21] andGenseric Kusunga.^[22]
