On 1 July, Celtic confirmed the signings ofAdam Matthews fromCardiff City,[4]Kelvin Wilson fromNottingham Forest[5] andDylan McGeouch fromRangers.[6] All three had already signed onpre-contract agreements and joined Celtic after their contracts expired. Three players also left the club after the expiry of their contracts. FormerGermany andSweden internationalsAndreas Hinkel[7] andFreddie Ljungberg[8] left along withBen Hutchinson.[9]

Celtic's pre-season started off with a three-match tour of Australia.[10] The first match was on 2 July and Celtic lost 1–0 againstCentral Coast Mariners.[11]

On 7 JulyNiall McGinn joined EnglishLeague One sideBrentford on a season-long loan.[12] The next dayGraham Carey signed forSt Mirren after Celtic agreed to cancel his contract.[13]

On 9 July Celtic played the second match of their Australian tour and beatPerth Glory 2–0.[14] On the same day Celtic officially signedVictor Wanyama fromBelgian Pro League clubK. Beerschot AC on a four-year deal.[15][16] He had signed for Celtic nine days earlier but had to wait to get awork permit.[17]

On 13 July Celtic won the final match of their Australian tour as they beatMelbourne Victory 1–0.[18]

Celtic's last friendly before the start of the league campaign was a 1–0 away win overChampionship sideCardiff.[19]

Due to the fact that the2011–12 Scottish Premier League started several weeks earlier than usual, Celtic's first competitive match came on 24 July. Goals fromKi Sung-yueng andAnthony Stokes secured victory overHibernian, althoughGary Hooper also missed a penalty in the match played atEaster Road.[20] Two days laterEfraín Juárez moved toLa Liga sideReal Zaragoza on loan.[21]

Celtic's next game was another friendly againstPremier League teamWolverhampton Wanderers which they lost 2–0.[22]

However, the match was overshadowed byEmilio Izaguirre suffering a broken ankle which was expected to keep him out till the new year.[27]Josh Thompson then went to Championship sidePeterborough on loan.[28]

On 17 August,Fraser Forster joined on a loan deal fromNewcastle United, having spent the previous season as first choice goalkeeper at Celtic.[29]

On 21 August, Celtic suffered their first home defeat toSt Johnstone since 1998 whenDave Mackay scored to give the away side a 1–0 victory.[30]

Richie Towell went toHibs for a second loan spell.[31]Daryl Murphy went on loan toIpswich Town.[32]

Greig Spence went on loan toFirst Division clubHamilton.[33]

September

[edit]

Sion won 3–1 on aggregate, however were found guilty of fielding ineligible players byUEFA and were excluded from the competition. As a result of this Celtic were awarded both matches as 3–0 wins[38] and took Sion's place in the group stage along withAtlético Madrid,Udinese andStade Rennais.[39]

On 5 September,Morten Rasmussen joined TurkishSüper Lig sideSivasspor, on a short-term loan, until December.[40]

Celtic drewRoss County in the third round of theLeague Cup[41] and beat the home side 2–0 atVictoria Park.[42] Celtic were then drawn to play Hibs in the quarter-final.[43]

October

[edit]

On 2 October, Celtic lost 2–0 toHearts atTynecastle with wingerKris Commons getting sent off. This defeat left Celtic in third place, 10 points behind leaders Rangers.[44] In the following match, Celtic drew 3–3 withKilmarnock atRugby Park. Kilmarnock had been leading 3–0 at half-time but two goals fromAnthony Stokes and aCharlie Mulgrew header brought Celtic back into it.[45] Following the Kilmarnock game, Celtic travelled to France to playRennes inUEFA Europa League action. Rennes led 1–0 at half-time after a mix-up betweenCha Du-ri andFraser Forster, butJoe Ledley scored in the second half with a header to secure a draw.[46] The Bhoys returned toScottish Premier League action defeatingAberdeen 2–1 atCeltic Park on 23 October 2011.[47]Hibernian were the opponents for the final two games of October. Celtic won 4–1 in theScottish League Cup[48] before the Edinburgh team secured a 0–0 draw in theScottish Premier League tie at Celtic Park on 29 October 2011.[49]

November

[edit]

Stade Rennais were Celtic's first opponents of November in the Europa League. Celtic won the match 3-1 thanks to anAnthony Stokes double and a third fromGary Hooper.[50] On 5 November 2011, Celtic were third in theScottish Premier League behind leadersRangers, who were 15 points clear of their rivals, andMotherwell.[51] Celtic then won four Scottish Premier League ties in November, defeatingMotherwell 2–1,[52]Inverness Caledonian Thistle 2–0,[53]Dunfermline 2-1[54] andSt Mirren 5–0.[55] November ended poorly for Celtic afterAtlético Madrid won 1–0 in aUEFA Europa League tie at Celtic Park, thanks to a goal fromArda Turan in the second half.[56] However, the excellent league form during November ensured Celtic won a clean-sweep of monthly awards withNeil Lennon winning SPL Manager of the Month,Gary Hooper winning SPL Player of the Month andJames Forrest winning SPL Young Player of the Month.[57]

December

[edit]

Celtic continued their excellent league form throughout December, winning all five of theirScottish Premier League games. A solitary goal fromGary Hooper in the first half was enough to defeatDundee Utd[58] whilst aVictor Wanyama strike from 25 yards saw off the challenge ofHearts at Celtic Park the following week.[59] Celtic travelled to Italy to faceUdinese in theUEFA Europa League and claimed a 1–1 draw, a result which meant they would exit the tournament at the group stages.[60]Gary Hooper added to his seasonal goal tally in a 2–0 win overSt Johnstone atMcDiarmid Park.[61]Georgios Samaras scored both in a 2–1 home win versusKilmarnock.[62] Celtic's last league game of 2011 was a home game against arch-rivalsRangers.Joe Ledley scored the only goal of the game as Celtic won 1–0.[63] The result meant that Celtic had overturned a 15-point deficit in theScottish Premier League and moved top of the league, two points clear of Rangers in the title race.

Rules for classification: 1) points; 2) goal difference; 3) number of goals scored.
(C) Champions;(D) Disqualified;(R) Relegated
Notes:
  1. ^Rangers were deducted 10 points for entering administration.[66] As Rangers did not exit administration by 31 March, they were ineligible to compete in Europe in the 2012–13 season. Rangers were unable to agree a CVA with their creditors and the company entered proceedings to be liquidated.[67] After a new company took over, Rangers applied to join the league structure and were placed into the2012–13 Scottish Third Division in time for the start of the season.[68]
  2. ^Hearts qualified for the Europa League as2011–12 Scottish Cup winners. Since they finished fifth in the league, the sixth-placed team, St Johnstone, also qualified for the Europa League.
