The2009 NHL entry draft was the 47thentry draft for theNational Hockey League. It was held on June 26–27, 2009, at theBell Centre inMontreal,Quebec.[1] The Draft was part of theMontreal Canadiens'centennial celebrations. NHL teams took turns selecting amateurice hockey players fromjunior, collegiate, or European leagues. TheNew York Islanders, who finished last overall in the2008–09 NHL season, retained the first overall selection following that year's NHL Draft lottery.[2]

The New York Islanders used thefirst overall pick to selectcenterJohn Tavares from theLondon Knights of theOntario Hockey League (OHL). TheTampa Bay Lightning used the second pick to draftdefencemanVictor Hedman fromModo Hockey of theSEL, and theColorado Avalanche draftedMatt Duchene of theBrampton Battalion with the third overall pick. Seven Swedes were selected in the first round, an all-time record for the country.[3]

As of 2025 there are 32 active NHL players from this draft.
