Four-time defending championRoger Federer defeatedAndy Murray in the final, 6–2, 7–5, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the2008 US Open. It was his fifthUS Open title and 13thmajor title overall. Federer moved to second place on theall-time men's singles major titles list, passingRoy Emerson.^[1] This remains the most recent US Open title defense in men's singles.

Murray was the first British man to reach a major final sinceGreg Rusedski at the1997 US Open, and was attempting to become the first British man to win a singles major sinceFred Perry in 1936^[2] (he would eventually achieve the featfour years later).

Rafael Nadal was attempting to become the first man to achieve theSurface Slam (winning majors onclay,grass andhard courts in the same year), having won theFrench Open andWimbledon titles. He lost to Murray in the semifinals. Nadal would eventually achieve the feattwo years later.

This was the first of four majors to feature all of theBig Four (Federer, Nadal,Novak Djokovic, and Murray) in the semifinals (followed by the2011 French Open,2011 US Open, and2012 Australian Open).

Gilles Muller became the first Luxembourgish player to reach a major quarterfinal.

This wasJuan Martín del Potro's first major appearance as a seeded player. He lost in the quarterfinals against Murray to end a 23-match winning streak. He would win the titlethe following year. Anotherfuture champion,Marin Čilić, appeared in the main draw of the US Open for the first time.

This marked the last major appearance of2002 Australian Open championThomas Johansson.
