The2008 Nottingham Open (also known as theSlazenger Open for sponsorship reasons) was a men'stennis tournament played on outdoorgrass courts. It was the 19th edition of theNottingham Open, and was part of theInternational Series of the2008 ATP Tour. It took place at theNottingham Tennis Centre inNottingham, England, United Kingdom, from 16 June through 21 June 2008.
The singles field was led byATP No. 16,Rome Masters semifinalist andSan Jose finalistRadek Štěpánek,Munich semifinalistPaul-Henri Mathieu, andHamburg Masters quarterfinalistFernando Verdasco. Among other players competing wereQueen's Club quarterfinalist andNottingham defending championIvo Karlović,Casablanca titlistGilles Simon,Dmitry Tursunov,Andreas Seppi andGaël Monfils.
Fourth-seededIvo Karlović successfully defended his 2007 singles title. The final was contested on indoor hard (not grass) due to rain.
Russian sixth seedDmitry Tursunov was expelled from the tournament by theATP after he stormed off the court in his doubles' first round match, dismayed at a decision from the line judge, asSimone Bolelli andAndreas Seppi led him and partnerChris Haggard 6–4, 3–1. While Tursunov was expected to receive a fine, theATP decided to deliver a more severe punishment, withdrawing him from the singles event. His scheduled second round opponent,Thomas Johansson, was given awalkover into the quarterfinals.[3]
