The2008 Masters Series Monte-Carlo (also known as theMasters Series Monte-Carlo presented by ROLEX for sponsorship reasons) was a men'stennis tournament played onoutdoor clay courts. It was the 102nd edition of theMonte Carlo Masters, and was part of theATP Masters Series of the2008 ATP Tour. It took place at theMonte Carlo Country Club inRoquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, nearMonte Carlo,Monaco, from 19 April through 27 April 2008.
The men's field was headlined byWorld No. 1 andEstoril Open winnerRoger Federer,Miami runner-up anddefending championRafael Nadal, andAustralian Open andIndian Wells titlistNovak Djokovic. Other notable names in the field wereMiami Masters championNikolay Davydenko,Valencia Open winnerDavid Ferrer,David Nalbandian,Richard Gasquet andMikhail Youzhny.
ChampionRafael Nadal became the first man sinceAnthony Wilding in 1914 to win four consecutive titles inMonte Carlo, and was therefore the first man to do so in theOpen Era.[3]Nadal also won the doubles event, forming an unseeded team withTommy Robredo. This made him only the second man inATP Masters Series history to win both the singles and the doubles events of a tournament, in the same year. The last man to do so wasJim Courier, at the1991 Indian Wells Super 9.[4]
For the second time only inATP Masters Series history, the top four seeds (Roger Federer,Rafael Nadal,Novak Djokovic andNikolay Davydenko) all reached the semifinals of the event. The last occurrence of this had taken place at the1999 Cincinnati Super 9 event, withPete Sampras,Patrick Rafter,Andre Agassi andYevgeny Kafelnikov all reaching the final four.[5]
