The2006California Insurance Commissioner election occurred on November 7, 2006. Theprimary elections took place on June 6, 2006. BusinessmanSteve Poizner, theRepublican nominee, defeatedLieutenant GovernorCruz Bustamante, theDemocratic nominee, for the office previously held by DemocratJohn Garamendi, who was term-limited andran for lieutenant governor. Poizner is the only Republican other than GovernorArnold Schwarzenegger to win a statewide election in California since 1998. This is the most recent time a Republican was elected the state’s Insurance Commissioner.
